Field Trip to WashU

I was heading home after school, looking for a coffee shop to go study, failure after failure, i didnt want to go into any of the ones still open. I stopped at a library and it was too innercity for me. Nothing i found made me feel happy. I was heading to my next one. It looked really cute and fancy, but i saw WashU on my left, so i did a U turn and found a parking spot in the visitor area.

I've been here before on one of my past adventures, and thought I should look for that secret spot i wanted to find again that i never could to study in. While i walked up the stairs into the building, i found a dining area that was really popular so i thought it would be a good place to sit and hangout. I love watching people, an seeing which one i might want to get the attention of, so this place appeared beautiful.

the first placed i stopped at was on the right side of the room, if you were getting ready to leave after picking up your food, so my back was turned to everyone who would traditionally walk on the right side everywhere they go. I think that is the most comfortable for all of us.

Right in front of me there was a doorway enterance from the outside patio. People mostly walked into the building from here, but very few walked out. Right there is a RUG, that 2 asian girls who were walking in the building wiped their feet on, either out of convenience, out of their religion in th ehome practices, or out of spite of seeing an underdressed man who was probably not supposed to be there. Maybe the floor was sticky walking from the cafeteria, and this was the first RUG.

I stayed and watched the crowd looking for the pretty people. Overheard very few conversations, like the one where a young man and female were telling the roomate they were going back to the dorm.

I saw that this WashU campus was a fancy place. Many of the students expect a lot, walk with pride, because they know what building they are walking through. On my drive here, coming through University City, and North of that, it gets run down very quickly. This is a campus full of wealth, life, and expense.

Just like Bugs that are attracted to the light, this place is lively. Energy everywhere, groups are busy, and students are just as measurably productive as anywhere else among each other, but that is just to rate the competition between one another. Those who study in one spot are a certain age group, and harder working that others out playing soccer. Just at a higher performance than the schools I've been to.

The culture here is rich with energy, and people dont come here to be lazy. Maybe depressed that they arent having more fun or living life the way they want to, per the quote of a few that mentioned they love what they do, but when they look at a list of careers, they cant decide. Along with another who said, not even upsetly, that she wanted to get a break from studying.

These individuals are hard to keep up with. The expectations of work they are put to, is a higher acuity than programs ive fone through. Each one of these popular girls is going to run a deparment, they dont fuckin mess around. They walk with power. I walked through the chemsitry building, and the demand these students were in to get the work done and fill out the comparable data on their sheet, made it look like everyone knew what they were supposed to be doing.

When im in a lab, im trying to make do with what i have, it appears that not everything is all there, maybe there isnt enough, or it doesnt look that nice. So im not usually focused on the protocol at all. The directions on what im supposed ot be doing hardly cross my mind when im supposedly where im supposed to be working.

These students had a plan, effort, and walked to their next spot with intention, not carrying around their paper whimsically, trying to check to make sure they know what the next thing is, that they are supposed to be doing. They just seemed like workers, at work, trained to do this. With no slack other than to work, and to think like a worker.

I was like damn that was never me. I went building to building trying to figure out where to sit, who to talk to, who to look up at and try to wait for them to look up too, so that maybe we could make eye contact. Im not sure what i want out of people watching, but it sure makes me unproductive towards the paper im supposed to be reading online, or practice problems im supposed to be running through. I cant find my favorite spot of immersement where im happy to see a bunch of faces that i want to talk to and make comments to.

I dont have a person next to me i can discuss my ideas with, and the rooms turned out to be very heavy in white noise. There was food everywhere, people kept gethering there, and i was wondering how productive the studying really was. The methods were not usual to me. Just a big party of groups hanging out trying to study material together. It has never worked for me, so i would leave.

I made a full lap, walked into almost every building, looked for the groups, shapes, and sized of the energy the crowds were giving off, and how productive i thought i could be there. So far, only 2 out of the unknown things im supposed to get done. i know i have 4 more that i wont get done tonight, but ill try.

I found the monsanto labs that i wanted to find, but i never found the secret study spot with comfy chairs and less than 20 spots to sit. Im hoping someone good looking is nearby when i get there, but hatever.

I walked by a few labs, saw through the doors a professor, i walked on by, and i went back like i usually do and walked into his office.

I knocked, and never told him who i was, but i said knock knock, "hello, what is your research about?", he responded with "how you sleep, and how you wake up". I was concerned he was commenting what in my right mind am i doing here, but i quickly realized that i might have an interest in this. i then asked "ishmishoshmoosh" (what they were using as samples to research this), and he was like you're wondering what we study. he described that they used pregnant women, and mice, and looked for connections to women who were late to bed and early to rise, and if they have premature births.

We talked about the 8billion neurons that we as humans are born with, and when we are born they get assigned a definition. This definition can change, as we go through life for each neuron. As it gets used, it grows, and as it shrinks, it never dies, but get replaced with something else. Once they die they are gone forever, and maybe that means we start dying.

he said that we eat to feed our brain, the majority of blood flow goes to the brain, and the eyes also take up a lot of caloric need. its how we see and think of affording the ability to acquire our next surplus of calories, or the chance to accumulate a steady amount to sustain our expectations of future needs.

Apparently 20,000 or so sit in the brain and regulate sleep and wake cycles. there is a lot of repetition in the brain, and a lot of regurgitation of the same thing, as a back up if X gets lost. We are born with the genetics to replace and build these X's.

That girl that just walked by is nervous because she is being led into a trap, and not leading the way, but wants to do it anyways, and is smiling to relieve her nerves. I fuckin hate the lucky men.

The neurons work in milliseconds, they are constantly converging and warping to other nodules in the brain even if we are repeating the same thought. The definition of that neuron is a guide to the food, and the million currently LIT, should provide direction to the next place on the map to achieve a state of effort and motivation that leads us to the food that is ranked on our priority list of desires.

Uplifting that desire is buried deep in our brain, and its probably not going to change very fast.

the need to think about evolutionary biology helps this PhD formulate his next question, next reading so he can prepare for his next study. There is a limited budget he has to work with, and wants to cover the most important information before the money runs out. He got 1200 female participants, never talked to a single one, designed the study, asked the nurses to get permission to be a part of the study, includes blood tests, sputum collection, extra questions.

The status of these women is confidential after the study. No further information can be collected once they are gone, even if their location is known. All future studies must start over with a new set of participants, and you can not share their information with anyone else if you know them personally.

i asked him what the hormone or bilogical mechanism this may all connect back to, and he stopped me and said that he was supposed to be finishing up to go have dinner with his wife, i said thank you, shook his hand and left.
